My Review

Lori and Stephanie are bet friends and more family than their blood relatives. Lori's family is wrapped in addiction, her parents, her older brother and she is the only one really looking out for her wee sister. Addiction claims them and danger and death is everywhere. When drugs take their final price it leave Lori with just Steph and with a horrific incident that bonds them forever they remain on the estate. We jump forward and both are parents, still fighting to survive and booze has become solace, when their boys start working for a local kingpin their secret is threatened to come to the light and putting not just them but their boys and both will do anything to protect them.

Ooft, set in Glasgow, Blackhill court, an estate, rough as and now we have this Billy big balls coming in, buying up everything, face of respectability but he is a dodgy biscuit, violent, aggressive but the show of being Mr Goodguy.

The book deals in a lot of dark topics, drugs, addiction, abuse, violence, endangerment and murder to name a few. It is has strong loyalty, bonds, making amends, friendship, bravery, recovery so it is a mixed bag which is always the making for a great read.

Short chapters which we always love and a bit or personal growth, redemption and my absolute favourite when karma comes a calling to bad people, oh yes, actions and consequences darling, 4.5/5 for us this time.

My Review

This is marked as a standalone BUT it does feature characters from the previous book, you can read this as a standalone but I absolutely recommend reading "Two Sisters". Cheryl Davidson is a woman on a mission, her son has been murdered, she blames her husband and his boss, if it wasn't for him/them Dean would still be alive. She doesn't just blame them, she blames Janey and her grand daughter Molly Rose and they are the full focus for her revenge. How do you get close to a female gangster type? Cheryl has a plan in place and she will get her revenge and take all of Janey's family down.

Guys this one, like the previous has some really shady ugly awful characters, there is people trafficking and all the abuse that goes with it, drugs, violence, murder, it is a full bag! Janey is reeling and still trying to recover after being run off the road, the love of her life is in a coma, one daughter gone, another in rehab and Molly Rose it trying to get back to normal. A new threat is coming, they are looking over their shoulder constantly trying to figure out who is after them.

The book is quite fast paced, there is always something going on, some skulduggery, revenge plan. In amongst that and themes of recovery we have Cheryl who is slowly falling apart, torn up by her grief and driven by her rage and thirst for revenge we follow her as she pursues justice for her son.

The depths of depravity, people using and abusing others for profit and getting their kicks, despite it being fiction I think because you know stuff like this goes on in parts of the world, you are hoping for retribution, 4/5.

My Review

So apparently this is book two in a series, I didn't know and started here, I will be going back and buying the first book now though. That said you can absolutely read as a standalone, that's what I done and we have brief throwbacks to Janey when she was younger so I don't feel we missed out starting here.

Janey is top of her game in the criminal world and the book flips between Orla, Sinead and Millie Rose, Janey's estranged family. Orla and Sinead are twins, given up at birth and now grown women, Sinead is addicted to substances and does what she needs to on the streets to fund her habit. Orla couldn't be more different, mum to teenager Molly Rose, owner of legitimate businesses. Janey has reached out to Orla who shuns her however when Janey's past impacts on them and putting them in danger Orla has no choice but to let Janey in, they will all do what it takes to protect Molly Rose but is it too late?

Not for the faint hearted, it covers topics of abuse, addiction, prostitution, abandonment, SA, trafficking (is touched upon), family, drugs, secrets and more. Set in Glasgow, we see just how far ripples have from the past/decisions to present and consequences of those. Family is at the heart of this one but with the long reach/affects of skulduggery and shady dealings that go on from living "the life" even if you aren't a direct part of it, 4/5 from me and I will be getting book one and looking forward to the next!

My Review

We open with someone being buried alive and trying to crawl out but the dirt keeps coming! Ooft nice shock opener. Meet Terry, gangster boss who keeps a tight leash on what is it, respect is earned and disrespected dealt with, harshly. We have two leading ladies in the book and flip between both, Annie seemingly comes from nowhere into Terry's life and fits in perfectly. Leah is miles away from the estate life and living with her hubby and 10 year old son Samuel. She has the PTA, drinks with the girls and a pretty tidy/nice life. As with all these types of books, everyone has secrets and things they need to hide but some are worse than others and some you just cannot outrun!

A lot of the scenes take place in the murkier parts so we see neglect, manipulation, drugs, coercion, shady and bad characters oh and murder of course! The book setting is Mainshill Estate in Glasgow, Mainshill Estate is fictional but absolutely drawn from real estates and if you are familiar with Glasgow then there are places you will absolutely recognise, see inspired Mainshill.

We see a glimpse of some of the darker side of humanity, the chapters are quite short and Kane creates a small world of dodgies, crime/gangsters and those who hang off their coat tails wanting a piece of the pie, ruled by them and the world they live in. 4/5 for me this time, perfect escapism with some shade, violence and stepping into a world of hardened criminals and some right dodgy biscuits :D

My Review

The blurb focuses a lot on Cara Fraser and her sons, Ryan and Sean and whilst the latter part of the book they do come more to the front it is the Bryson's who feature as the main runners at the start. Angie Bryson & her husband Dale have their fingers in a lot of pies and Cara's husband Kyle and brother Ian work for the Brysons, distributing drugs primarily. Angie and Cara don't get on and Kyle and Ian have put their plans in motion to become the top dogs. The timeline splits between then and now when the Frasers have decided, again the time is right, the time is now.

There is a lot of rivalry, competitiveness as often there is in gangland type books, fights for power, actions and consequences, shady underhanded behaviour and of course some people will go to any levels for what they feel is due them. Revenge, pride, business, drugs, rivalry, family, murder and is it even a gangster stle book if we don't have betrayal.

There are quite a few relationship dynamics, some you are shaking your head at antics/choices and behaviours but in this lifestyle it is a different world. One characters behavior though I was almost screaming NOOOOOOOO what are you doing?!?!?!

I have read a few of Kane's books and have another couple on my tbrm, when you pick up the books you can get lost in a different world or chaos and danger just waiting for some consequence to their actions. Bad behaviour, shady choices and the old secrets can never remain in the past dun dun dun, 4/5 for me, a wee bit of build up setting the scene and then you are plunged right in! This is a standalone, if you like gangster/ganglands then this is for you - oh and it is set in Glasgow.

My Review

Hello Glasgow, meet Donnie Black - we first meet him as a young teen and quickly get the measure of his character. Skip on to him as an adult, the loss of his father and taking over the empire with his brother, making his mark on things. His wife Layla, sweet Layla had no idea back then what she was getting into and loses herself in a cloud of booze to cope with her life. Layla has no idea just how bad Donnie is and Donnie is about to get his hands even dirtier.

I do think Kane goes from strength to strength, I read her first book and have a few others on the tbrm. Gangland, turf wars, a gangster wanting to prove himself just as good as his old man and getting into darker avenues. He really is scum, he manipulates, exploits, uses people because to him they are commodities, a means to an end.

The book looks at some really dark aspects of humanity, human trafficking, violence, murder, drugs, family all of the dark and dangerous goings on and it is set in Glasgow! I love when a book takes place somewhere you know or have been, for me it adds a bit of something.

The family business looks at how some people test loyalty, have none, destroy anything, risk everything and the good old actions and consequences. It is hard to go into without spoilers and I don't do spoilers. The book is bursting with action, shocking behaviour, redemption, emotional, abuse, violence and absolute breath holding moments, 4.5/5 for me this time. I need to bump the rest of them up my tbrm. I hope she brings us more set in the city of Glasgow!

My Review

A gentleman's club, dancers and a bit extra if the money is right. Amber is one of the top in the club but Amber isn't there by choice, she is just trying to survive. Lizzy is the head of the club, owner and always there for her girls but sometimes we don't see what is right in front of us especially if we are distracted by our secrets from the past. Jade, innocent Jade just loves her boyfriend Marcus, security and investor in the club. She doesn't like the way some of the girls are with him and sees Amber as a potential threat. Jade has no idea just what Marcus is really like, what he is hiding and most importantly - what he has in store for her.

Three women, all involved with the club, each in different ways but all connected to the same fate. A path that brings them all together could be the very thing that threatens their lives or saves them.

This book has some pretty dark themes, abuse, drugs, enforced prostitution, addiction, slavery, violence, secrets, love, murder, lies, it is pretty packed. The chapters are names and we hear and see Amber, Lizzy, Jade and Marcus through their own voices as they each interact and fall deeper into the seedy world that some of them had no idea existed.

Pulled in quickly you are desperate to see where the story goes and just how evil and shady some of the characters are. 4/5 for me, I have read this author before, just bought another of hers and got another one or two to get. Absolutely recommend!

Q&A with the fabulous Alex Kane

Happy April you guys, so sorry this is my first post, been working and trying to catch up on blog stuff all day!




Welcome Alex Kane to the blog, Alex has very kindly taken some time out to answer some questions and chat about her new book "No Looking Back" previously released as "Chasing the Traveller".





Tell us about your journey so far as an author

It has been brilliant. I have been writing for around ten years now and have written a few books under my own name, Emma Clapperton. I dabbled in self-publishing for a few years and it worked well for me, however I really wanted to have the backing of a publisher so I continued submitting and found a home for my supernatural thrillers. As time went on, I wanted to try something a bit different so I went on to write a standalone back in 2016, which was signed under a big Scottish publisher, but sadly the company went into liquidation so I self-published Chasing the Traveller, which has now been re-edited and released by Hera Books as NO LOOKING BACK.

Lets talk about the new book, what is it about?

Kat Denton has been in a loveless, abusive marriage with Jimmy and decides it’s time to leave. She escapes with her sister in law, Ellie and then discovers she is pregnant. The women go on a journey of recovery and although they are rebuilding their lives, both fear that they will always be looking over their shoulders. Kat’s journey however, leads her to discover more than she could have imagined and the horror which she faces leads her back to the very man she fled from.

What inspired this story?

I wanted to write about strong women and give women a voice within the scenario I have written about. Coercive control within a relationship is being highlighted all over the place right now and I wanted to highlight it within my writing. Women (and men) in these types of relationships can suffer in silence for years, where even the people closest to them don’t know what is happening to them. I also wanted to set the book somewhere unusual and I have always found the travelling community highly interesting.

What research did you have to do for the book?

I used to work with a girl who lived within the travelling community and she was on hand for any questions I had and helped to make it as authentic as possible. I also researched women’s refuges, help for people in relationships of domestic abuse and tried to be as sensitive as I could for anyone reading the book who has been in similar circumstances. I was also careful to highlight that the travelling community does not mean all relationships are typically negative.

What are you working on now?

I am working on the edits for my next Hera Books title, WHAT SHE DID. Hera will release information on that in due course…

Will you be touring, doing any shop or online chats?

I am on all social media platforms and am always posting as well as joining in with other bookish chat. I don’t have any tours planned as such, other than the blog tour for the release. However I am happy to chat to anyone who has any questions at any time.

Do you have any quirks, must do's, writing rituals?

I do always have to have a fresh cuppa next to my laptop when I am writing. I do have a bad habit of typing a few hundred words then accidently finding myself on Facebook or Instagram. I also like to listen to certain types of music when writing particular scenes to help me to set the scene in my head.

What advise would you give to fellow authors or anyone wanting to write a book?

When you have an idea in your head, run with it. Plan if you’re a planner or just write if you’re not. And don’t give up.

Today is my stop on the blog tour for Chasing The Traveller by Alex Kane. Thanks so much Alex for writing a great book, asking me on the tour and taking time out to answer some questions.

You wrote under a different name previously, incase anyone doesn’t know, what was it and why the change?

I write supernatural crime thrillers under Emma Clapperton. I changed my name for the genre switch because I didn’t want people to buy the book and expect supernatural crime and get something different.

What made you choose the travelling community as the set up for this story?

I have a genuine interest in the travelling community and there didn’t seem to be any books out there that tackled such domestic abuse within that setting.

Domestic violence and emotional abuse are horrific topics, some of the scenes will be very disturbing for some readers due to their realistic creation. How did you manage to create/tap into this?

Honestly, I have been fortunate enough not to experience this kind of thing in my life. I can only imagine what it must be like for someone to go through this kind of thing. I tried to imagine how awful it would be and how I would feel if my partner was controlling everything I did, who I saw, what I wore, even what I said. It must be the loneliest place a person can be.

When I picked this book up I thought it was going to be more of a murder thriller type read. Whilst there are themes of this, for me the heart is Kat’s personal journey, was this your vision for the book?

I wanted to write about Kat and her escape. However, I can’t imagine the torment automatically stops when you leave that kind of relationship. I wanted to write about her journey, her road to recovery and finding herself again. Of course, with it being a psychological thriller, I wanted to include some drama in there too.

What research did you do for Chasing the Traveller and did you enjoy it?

I used to work with someone who is a traveller. She was great at helping me out with the language and certain words or phrases that are typically used. I really enjoyed learning about the community and how they live.

What is next for Alex Kane?

I am working on my next psychological thriller. Working title; HER

Depending on how they know me, I will respond to either.

My Review

Kat Denton is battered, abused, treated like an animal and has nowhere to turn to in her travelling community. Finding herself in a situation that changes everything and forms an unlikely alliance with Ellie, her sister in law, Kat takes the plunge and runs from her abusive husband. This is their story, by escaping Kat and Ellie find themselves on a journey of self discovery, healing, hope and that you cannot outrun your past.

I have bought a few of this authors work when writing under Emma Clapperton but had yet to read them. This is a genre switch and my first dance with this author, the story is both very dark and filled with hope. The start of the story sees Kat being horrifically abused by her husband, violence, rape, emotional abuse and manipulation which makes for hard reading at parts. It is very real to life in parts and I think anyone who has experienced such trauma(s) may find a very emotive response. Passages like this in fiction is really a testament to the authors writing skills and much of the book is not like this, however I feel it needed comment on.

I thought the story was going to be lots of violence and suspense, in actual fact a lot of the focus was about rebuilding a life, acceptance, self discover, survival and recovery. Trust and learning how to assess, accept and recover from emotional manipulation, we follow Kat's very personal journey. It also has danger looming on the edges as Kat and Ellie are on the run from Kat's husband who we know could appear anywhere. The book is a very different read than what I expected and depending on the readers background and life experiences I think it will strike very emotive responses.

Human beings are amazing in what they can endure, survive and cope and whilst this is a work of fiction I think many will be able to relate to it from very real experiences. The book tackles relationships, roles, abuse, family, friendship, love, actions and consequences it also has a sense of danger, survival and the old you cannot run from your past. It is a busy wee book and had time permitted I would have read it in one sitting. 4/5 for me, at time of posting the ebook is available for pre order for 99p.
