My Review

I loved the idea of this one, anything with sharks for me is a win let alone flinging a serial killer into the mix. The book chapters, so the first and opening is a male kidnapped by two females and then the chapters are split and alternate between Raych and Carmen. Raych talks about how it starts with her and Carmen and how they "met" not counting the three days they spent together in a mental health facility. They have both been stalking the same guy, the killer, Raych lost someone she loved, her bestie and the police have let them down, all of the victims. Carmen has her own reasons for wanting him and together they both fall together and end up unlikely allies.

So the book really took me a bit to settle to, both the girls have their own issues, mental health, home life but they have the same goal. Finding the person responsible for the deaths of local girls who are star swimmers, the girls have the same goal.

It is chaotic, choppy, disorganised and I think it adds weight to how troubled both girls are for different reasons but it did make things a struggle for me. There is a lot of ground covered in the book, we flip flop about to what they girls experienced, their time together in a mental health care facility, their issues. For Raych her sexuality and her encounter with her bestie right before she disappeared so there is a lot of emotion and unresolved questions let alone what actually happened to her. Is the killer stashing her somewhere. The plan is simple, kidnap the bad guy and do what is needed to get the answers they seek whilst avoiding the cops and if able, find and save Raych's best friend Piper.

The first three quarters was a bit of a rough ride for me. I did want to know more about the girls, why is Carmen's sister such a horror. What did happen to Piper, will Raych find her friend, will the killer admit to everything? I also was expecting there to be more sharks but I always want more when it comes to sharks lol. It was just a bit all over the place for me until the last quarter and then I really felt it came into itself, evened out and got a grip on what was happening. This was my first time reading this author, I would read her again but hoping the narrators are a wee bit more reliable, 3/5 for me.

My Review

Book location is Evelyn Bay, Tasmania, beautiful but unpredictable sea that has already claimed lives. Kieran Elliot is back to help his mum, dad's dementia is much worse than Kieran realised and being home reignites all his guilt. Twelve years ago his brother and friend died and it is all Kieran's fault. Now back with his partner, also from there, with their baby Kieran is feeling mixed emotions and reception from people. When a young girl is found dead an investigation starts and a lot of the past is raked up which is never a good thing in a small town.

Intrigue, mystery, secrets, love, friendship, lies it has a mix of everything and I loved reading it when our weather turned so we had a thunder and lightning storm. It just made it for perfect reading, very atmospheric, she creates a great visual for the reader anyway but having it both on paper and surrounding me was just perfect timing.

It isn't the type of book where it is actions and fast paced, more of a slow burner but absolutely drawing you in. Small town, no privacy, everyone has an opinion on everyone and everything and you feel Kieran reexperiencing how he obviously felt back when the tragedy struck. Things highlight why we left i the first place, the impact on his relationship with his parents. Small bits of the story teased out and slowly revealed so you are kept guessing, well I was.

I think this is my second book by Harper and will absolutely be reading her others, 4/5 for me this time.

My review

Federal Police investigator Aaron Falk is heading back to his small town home, left under a dark cloud and now no choice but to return. His childhood friend Luke and his family are dead by murder/suicide. Aaron can't quite believe it but on some level maybe just maybe could Luke have really have done this atrocity?

Aaron doesn't get the most warm welcome, the small town is facing the worst drought in one hundred years which is affecting everyone and tempers are raised. Whilst Aaron and one officer unofficially look into the deaths Aaron also has to face the wrath of what he ran from. Small towns don't forget and everything must be answered for.

This is part police investigation, a bit psychological thriller, small town mentality and intrigue as we flip between present and the past with the lead up what led Aaron to leave town. Violence, secrets, lies, friendships, small town mentality and all the jazz that comes with it. You have the two deaths/timelines also the effects of the drought on the towns people and the stresses/issues that brings too. Different but interesting and book one, I will be looking out for the next in the series, 4/5 for me.

My Review

Set in 1978 in Australia, where life and the times are very different from there here and now. We focus mostly on the four ladies of the Fairvale Ladies Book Club and how the book club comes to be and what it means to the ladies. Sybil brings them all together, with her best friend Rita who works as a nurse in the Flying Doctor service. Sybil's daughter in law Kate, from England and Della from Texas and a working hand. Each in need of friendship and finding it from joining the book club. As we delve into the book we find out a bit more about each of the ladies and how the books bring them together closer, a book with family and friendship very much at the heart of it.

A genteel book, not something I normally go for but I am really happy I was sent this one to read. The ladies are very different from each other, Sybil has never recovered from the rejection of her son and always pines over him. Rita has never had time for much bar Sybil and her job, Kate misses back home and her doubts of being a good wife. Della, from a family that either takes her for granted or expects more than she can give she finally breaks free and comes to Australia.

I loved the description on the scenes in this book, Australia is not a country I have ever been to, would love to but the actual distance not to mention the bugs, ooft just no! Reading about how the seasona affect not just the land but the impact on those living and working on it was really interesting. The relationships, family values and traits of each character all engage the reader, well it did for me. My complaint would be, despite it being a relatively large read there was some parts that cut short or left you hanging without full insight. To be fair, lots of people don't mind some intrigue, I like to know all the ins and outs so that would really be my only complaint.

If work hadn't got in the way I would have probably read this in one sitting, it covers many issues presented for the setting and timeline. Racial issues, social expectations of woman and their roles, love, loss, grief, friendship and much more. 4/5 for me this time, if you want a read that takes you to a different location, gives you a variety of characters you want to read more and more off and just a wee escapism this one is absolutely for you. My first dance with this author, most assuredly won't be my last, a wee delightful book!
