Today is my turn on the blog tour for "The Sound of Violet" by Allen Wolf.

About the author:

Allen Wolf has won multiple awards as an author and filmmaker. He is also the host of the popular Navigating Hollywood podcast where he interviews film and TV professionals about what it takes to thrive in entertainment.

He married his Persian princess, and they are raising their kids in Los Angeles. Allen loves traveling around the world and hearing people’s life stories. He is an avid fan of Disneyland. Allen wrote, directed, and produced the feature film adaption of The Sound of Violet, which is now available on Apple TV, Prime Video, Vudu, Google Play, Blu-ray, or DVD.

My Review

Shawn is our main character he just really really wants a wife and family, he works within a dating style agency and sees the success of his co-worker with the ladies. Shawn is desperate to get past first dates but it always seems to go wrong when it seemed to be going well. Shawn is also autistic and tends to say things as he sees them which often ends up landing him in some hot water with his dates and as an observer (reading) the story I did chuckle, bless him. When a seemingly chance meeting brings Violet into Shawn's life he thinks he has finally found the one. However Shawn's unique outlook means he misses all the clues to exactly who and what Violet is, will finding out the truth change anything?

Aw Shawn is the kind of character you cannot help but like and feel endeared to, he has elements of Sheldon Cooper and looks at things differently than we do. he is autistic working as a programmer, living with his grandma. He is close to his brother who couldn't be more different and they are a sweet trio.

Some of the book is funny, I almost spat my juice out at one of Shawn's comments on a date, he doesn't miss a beat because he is just being him, observing whereas the lady in question is not pleased, bless him. The book itself for only being just under 200 pages actually packs a lot in and whilst we have humour and light heartedness we also touch on some really dark topics and horrible scenes/sides of humanity. Violet is a prostitute which opens a lot of dark doors, human trafficking is touched upon, violence, drugs, exploitation but there is also love, friendship, loyalty, sweetness, innocence in parts.

The book is also a major motion picture I am hoping to watch soon. The characters are broad and range from quirky, sweet, loveable to those you want to shake, slap, scream at. As I say it is a lot packed into a small book and I would like to read more of Shawn's antics and adventures, 4/5 for me this time. This was my first dance with this author I would read him again!

My review

Two kids fighting, milestones, the impact they have on your relationship, the impact on your life. Here is the no holds barred account by one mother on her journey, pre motherhood, pregnancy and when the journey of her children taking over her life.

There is a fair bit of humour through her tellings but I imagine a fair few people will be raging, annoyed, upset at some of the banter throughout. She gives a stripped account of her failings, how she and her o/h cope with tantrums, their own relationship after the kids. It is parenting stripped bare, the things a lot of parents would never admit to, thinking, saying, feeling.

For me I think some of it has flashes of humour that if it was snippets in a weekly magazine it would be, for me, better received. As it is a book I felt some of it a wee bit uncomfortable reading and as a non parent I am sure that sounds judgey. I laughed at bits some parents would wince or be enraged at, I get the humour and the whole taboo of admitting your kids aren't 100% perfect nor is she the perfect parent. I think the honestly will generate love and hate from camps in equal measures depending on your view point.

It is a funny, brutal and honest book and whilst I didn't love it I know so many will. Parenting with a light shone on it, I think a lot of parents will read it and whisper ha it isn't just me or blow a gasket thinking people actually think/talk about/to their kids like that. I don't know how I feel about it to be honest, I don't hate it, I don't love it. Some days I read and really liked bits of it, some days I really didn't. A lot of it I think is tongue in cheek and if you take it for what it is you will like it, some have loved it. I think 2.5/5 for me this time, absolutely check it out, see which camp you fall into.

This novel has been revised for errors. I don't guarantee that there aren't any in it, but there's a whole lot less now.


My Review

Bubba is living in a historical mansion, with his mother, in Texas. He is a catch by all accounts and a hard working chap with his dog Precious. When a dead body is found in the grounds at his house and found to be his ex fiance, he is arrested. He gets out and starts his own investigation, why was she back, who wanted to kill her and could he be in danger?

This book really missed the mark for me, his mother is a card and the humour these guys have is what saved the book from a 1 star rating. The murder and actions of the investigating police was farcical, a lot of the dialog is stretched and so descriptive when one simple sentence would suffice. Some of the things the characters said. For example "He drank gratefully from it, sighing with relief at the influx of the much-needed addictive substance into his body". Or "That's a loose tooth all right. It's my professional opinion, based on years of advanced training in the area of human medicines, and years of practice that you should have a shot of twelve-year-old scotch, and then go see a dentist. Now lemme have a look at that eye". Just lots and lots of paragraphs like that really detracted from the enjoyment and the story for me. However, lots of people love it and felt it was fitting with the setting of the book.

You always get answers to most of your questions which again is for me always a good thing, however, the whole tale was just a bit silly and out there. Even the tongue in cheek humour and great character of his mother wasn't enough to rescue this book for me. I wouldn't read any more of this series but I would try the author again, 2/5 for me this time. I think this may be a marmite book as, like I said, many people seem to love it, it just was not for me.
