My Review

This is book four in the San Diego case files, I haven't read the previous three but that doesn't ever stop me. The books are great you can pick them up and read as standalones, this one features Akiko - she has always wanted to know more about her bio family. She has Kit, her foster sister who was also taken in by the same loving family and has her own issues. She is a cop so when Akiko gets a call from someone who says they knew her bio mum Akiko needs to go. Kim insists on going too along with her boyfriend (police psychologist), when they arrive at the callers house they are shot at and it all kicks off from there.

Kim is hurt in the shooting so on medical leave and when more danger arrives Kit is furious when the cop assigned to the case is one who is not just lazy but has a grudge against Kit. Despite threats to her safety and threats from work about consequences if she doesn't let the police do their job Kit won't leave her sister nor stop digging to see who wants her hurt.

The book has loads of threads, characters and secrets which we LOVE, we know Akiko is in the dark, imagine this has been a theme through the previous books. We also learn about how the girls came to meet and be fostered with the family so it is fine we haven't read the previous three. There is danger on every corner, no one seems to be safe and we have no idea where the thread is coming from or why which hooks you and keeps you turning the pages. 4/5 for me this time and I have went back and bought book one of the series and will catch up on those I missed.

My Review

The book opens with a shooting/execution then flips forward to present day Phineas Bishop is recovering/dealing with PTSD - working security at Broussard Private Investigations. When Cora J Winslow comes into the office needing help, her father has been found dead, died over 20 years ago however Cora has been getting letters from him all this time. The police aren't interested and soon Cora is being hunted and targeted but she doesn't know why. Phineas becomes her bodyguard, the squad take on her case and starts digging, what could be driving someone to hunt Cora and what is it she has that they want?

As with Rose books we always have a bit of spice, this one only has a little less than I remember from the others but still if you haven't read her before this is your heads up, there is some spice! We split between Cora and co and the bad guy so as the reader we are clued in a bit to what is going down.

This is book 3 of the New Orleans series, I don't know if I have read the previous ones and if I have it has been a while so you can absolutely read it as a standalone. There are themes and scenes with behaviours relating to PTSD and the long lasting/reaching affects it has, not only on the individual but their loved ones and daily life.

I do enjoy Rose books and I like how we have characters that have been in other series or maybe I am just thinking of the previous book(s), I need to check my blog/Goodreads, 4/5.

My Review

I LOVE Karen Rose books, I am sure I have gaps in the series and need to go back and buy up those I have missed. This is book two in the Sacramento series, go and read book one if you haven't already as there is a lot of the story is follow on from book one. We focus on Mercy and Rafe, with all the side characters in between but these two are our main focus. Mercy wants to make amends with her brother Gideon, for years she hated him for leaving her and her mum in the cult. Suffering abuse, brain washing, manipulation and female children as young as twelve being married off in the commune Mercy has a lot to be angry about. Book two is about her facing the realities of Gideon's life, the long reach/scars from the commune and that sometimes you cannot outrun your past, not matter how long you have broken free from it.

Be warned guys, this has a lot centered around the cult, murder, rape, abuse, brain washing and what is at the heart of most of these "communities" money and power. Mercy quickly realises she will never be truly free from her past and instead on putting her head in the sand she needs to face it. Before more people are hurt, killed or even risking her own life. Her brother and Rafe are cops, she should be safe as houses but these people stop at nothing and we see from the very beginning how far they will go. Action packed, pacey, shocking, enraging, romantic, healing empowering an d huge character growth for some of these guys. Hard truths, overcoming inner demons and learning to trust, Rose intertwines all of this in a tale of death, murder, abusers whilst bringing in love, friendship, trust and family.

Despite being in double figures with these books she manages to bring fresh stories and lets the reader get to know more of the characters and keeping the stories new and shocking, 4.5/5 for me this time. Already impatiently waiting on the next book in the series!

My Review

All Michael has ever done is look out for his wee brother Joshua, their mother is more interested in her addictions and husband than she is in her children's well being or needs. Michael has suffered horrific abuse at his stepdad's hands and won't allow the same to happen to his brother. When he stops his stepfather from bringing harm to Joshua he unwittingly comes onto the radar of a killer who will stop at nothing to remain free.

If you have followed the series you will know the the main characters Dani and Diesel, we have all bee rooting for them from the earlier books but Dani keeps Diesel at arms length. In this book we get a bit more insight into why and hope that maybe this time we will get the union we have all been hoping for. Michael and Joshua end up crossing paths with Dani and Diesel, the killing is hunting down people who threaten his freedom and the boys need protecting, Dani, Diesel and the team are the perfect candidates for the job.

There is abuse mentioned in the book, sex scenes, love, relationships, friendships and if you have followed the previous books and series we get wee snippets of some of our previous much loved characters. The book is deep in some areas and some of the topics a bit hard hitting, sexual abuse, the impact of having a health condition that impacts on so many areas of your life but it has so many positives too. Strength, love, unity, friendship, personal growth and so much more. If you enjoy Rose's previous books you will love this, action, character growth/development, hearing from the bad guy's point of view. I look forward to Rose's next book and seeing what is in store for the characters we have grown to love along the years, 4.5/5 for me this time.

Who is your biggest influence as a writer?
Probably Carolyn Keene (all of them!), authors of the Nancy Drew stories. They were my favorite detective stories and I cut my mystery-writing teeth reading and trying to figure out whodunit.

What is your most socially unacceptable writing habit?
LOL, this isn’t a fair question! Okay, the most socially unacceptable habit that I’m willing to admit to: I choose a song and play it on infinite loop until it becomes background sound. In past books it was Barry Manilow’s When October Comes or Josh Groban’s Evermore or Pink Floyd’s Wish You Were Here. For SAY YOU’RE SORRY, it was a medley of Hallelujah, including versions by K.D. Lang, Lindsey Stirling, and Jeff Buckley. I apologize to my husband, my dog, and any neighbors who were adversely affected. (My husband still gets a twitch at certain songs, LOL.)

Have you ever killed anyone off from real life in one of your novels?
Hmmmm. Well, the right answer is that “any resemblance to persons alive or dead is purely coincidental.” But the truth is: Yes. There are a few old bosses, the kid who spit on me when I was seven years old, and a doctor or two who ticked me off. I look at it as therapy I don’t have to pay for.

What was your favourite book as a child?
Little Women, by Louisa May Alcott.

What is your favourite writing snack?
M&Ms. But I have attempted to limit this to an every-100-pages reward. Somehow veggies and hummus just aren’t the same. Boo.

My review


Special Agent Gideon Reynolds is a professional, he keeps himself to himself, never having quite got over his past he finds relationships hard. When a woman is attacked and it links back to his past he is forced to face things he thought long buried in the past. Daisy Dawson is the lady Reynolds finds himself having to protect, after a maniac trys to abduct her they soon realise this isn't a random attack and Daisy may not be out of the woods just yet!

Ooooh if you have read Rose before you KNOW what to expect, a bad guy who is usually terrifying this one if many steps ahead of the law. He is well versed in his craft and knows how to capture them, hold them, kill them and dispose of them. He has never had any trouble until he encounters Daisy, what follows is a game of cat and mouse putting everyone at risk, can Daisy stay safe?

We hear from the killer as well as following Daisy, agent Reynolds and some of the police force involved in the investigation. The killer makes the hairs stand up on the back of your neck, he is smart, organised, ruthless., brutal and shows no mercy for those at the hands of his predilections. In among this Daisy and Reynolds are being ushered together by circumstances and family who would rather both took an involvement in the other sex. Neither are focused on that with so much at stake however they cannot deny a pull toward each other....

The book is fast paced and you would think at 500 plus pages you may taper off but the action keeps going and I found myself picking up the book every chance I got. I have read Rose plenty of times and whilst some crime books try and fail at a romance angle Rose pulls it off, in my opinion, every time. It doesn't detract from the story and sometimes when you are least likely looking for love you can't help but fall into it!

The book explores some really dark themed, violence, murder, abuse, cults, romance, relationships, love,sex, police procedural, investigation and that is just for starters. Rose is an author who has honed her craft and manages to keep it fresh despite having written so many books now. I always look forward to a new release and this one was no different , a start to a new series although I am sure I recognized some characters from previous books. I really need to look back at the books I have missed and try read them in order, great books, 4.5/5 for me this time!

My Review


Taylor Dawson has gotten herself a position at a horse therapist stables where they help to treat children who have been victims. Taylor has ulterior motives, she is checking up on her father, a man she has ran from her whole life and been terrified from. Until, on her death bed, her mother gave her a confession of sorts and Taylor has to find out the truth about her biological father. The clients of the program are often traumatised and or at risk, Taylor meets one such child and finds herself the target of a madman and putting those around her at risk too.

So some of the characters in the book are part of another series and this one is book five, I haven't read all of the previous books and the ones I have haven't been in order. I think you can get away with picking this up and reading it as a standalone as it gives you enough info to get the jist of the background characters. I would advise though if you are reading or planning to read the others I would read them first as there are spoilers in this one.

The book features murder, relationships, secrets, lies and as is Rose's signature there is some lust, petting and sex or sexual thoughts. There is a fair amount of violence also and the pace is fast as we have a brutal murder from the first chapter and it kicks off from there. A cat and mouse game played between one psychotic criminal and those trying to protect an innocent, a budding attraction with a host of emotions, dilemmas, dangerous situations and how a close knit family pull together. I have read Rose before and I will read her again, 4/5 for me with this page turner.

My Review

The FBI are on the verge of exposing and bringing down child abusers and kidnappers. FBI agent Davenport is now out from undercover but in critical condition in hospital in a coma. The team need his information to help bring down the ring and save the children. Plenty of people don't want Davenport to talk and will stop at nothing to save their lucrative business, including blackmail and murder.

This almighty chunk of a book has a lot going on in it, book 18 of a series and many main characters from previous stories lines. I haven't read them all but have read a fair few & think I will head back and pick the rest up. Kids are being taken and forced into the sex trade, drugs are a plenty with the professor making a mint from college kids to high roller professionals. He has more to lose than most and won't allow his empire to tumble down. With the content, some parts of the story can be for hard reading although unlike some books there isn't a huge focus on the minute details of abuse these kid endure.

The pace is relatively fast, we are either following the bad guys and their dastardly deeds, manipulation, violence and of course murders or with the police and the undeniable attraction between some of the characters, particularly Coppola & Decker. As well as being a fast paced police investigation we have some relationship developments, scenes of a sexual nature and bad language used throughout. Characters, there are many who are interlinked and have definitely featured in previous books and some of them are related, if you haven't read the previous books you will be able to follow them however reading the backlog would certainly help. We do get an insight into the background of some of the characters and a way of explanation for how they are they way they but no in great depth.

I think some people thought the book could have been condensed however I disagree, I think looking at how many characters actually feature and we visit different scenes involved each it works well. 4/5 for me this time, I will pursue the previous works I have missed and absolutely read anymore that come out from this series. My Review

Daphne Montgomery is facing one of the biggest days in her career, trying to convict a member of a white supremacist family. When the verdict is read out, all hell breaks loose and Daphne is threatened. Soon the threat becomes real as Daphne's son is kidnapped, Daphne thinks it is linked to the case but soon discovers this is a lot deeper and everything Daphne has tried to protect, including her life, is at risk.

I remembered small snippets from the previous book and wish I had re read it to be more familiar but it doesn't take away from the actual story. It is fairly fast paced and kicks off at the start of the book, your drawn in quickly. There is quite a bit of graphic violence and murder throughout and also some racy sex scenes so if your easily offended or upset, this one isn't for you. If your already familiar with Karen Rose's work she is true to form and won't disappoint with this tale.

Secrets are laced throughout the book going back to Daphne's childhood, it takes us a while to get there but there is so much going on your never bored. Fast paced, chilling, gruesome, murder and some romance the book has just about everything covered. A really enjoyable read, secrets, chapters are fairly big however there are small short sub chapters throughout so you can dip in and out as you need/ 4/5 for me this time and of course I will continue to keep reading this author and catch up on the back catalogue.

My review

Dr. Lucy Trask has a past she would rather forget however as a killer starts pilling up bodies and Dr Trask is at the center of the killers attention she may need to face it sooner than she expected. J.D Fitzpatrick is the homicide detective investigating and can't help but be distracted by Lucy while he tries to discover what the link is between her and the killer.

I really like Karen Rose, I have the books I have read so far and I did enjoy this one. The killer has a voice throughout the book and we go from chapter to chapter from Trask and Fitzpatrick to our killer and what he is doing. The killings are graphic and bloody, there is some sexual scenes throughout so it is not for the faint hearted. The pace is fairly quick and the killings start from the outset. The only thing I would maybe grump about would be the way the interaction/relationship plays out between our two main characters, Trask and Fitzpatrick. It is almost like a cat and mouse game with them to begin with and they are very cat on hot coals with each other yet they need to work together to figure out what is the obsession with this killer.

Another detail that will keep you hanging on is the motive the killer has is dragged out, in his chapters he makes it clear he blames Lucy for his vendetta and what happened and this is teased out in very small snippets throughout the book. Otherwise it is a book that keeps you going and interested until all is revealed. I like a book that ties up all loose ends and Rose delivers with this one, 4/5 for me this time.
