My Review

If you haven't read Binding 13 then DO NOT read this one first, I often read books out of sequence however book one is an absolute before this one. It goes through how they met, everything about Shannon's home life, how they got to where they are but most importantly, this book opens where Binding 13 stopped.

So we know from book one this isn't just a YA romance there are some really deep dark topics visited. I said in my previous review if the author hasn't had first hand experience with this then she has done very in depth research, if you have ever lived through any of this you know, I actually wasn't expecting the level of emotion some of those scenes evoked. The alcoholic abusive violent father, the way the mother behaved it really did pull the rug a bit but if you read book one you know all this and are prepared. Whilst we visit all of that Shannon and Johnny are a couple , Shannon still has some issues from Johnny's bunny boiler ex, I really really wanted karma to get her good. We see more of Shannon's family, siblings, Johnny's parents and pals and Johnny's injury, rehab and focus for his career and future.

There is so much emotion in this one too, we know of Shannon's struggles but I feel we get more than a glimpse into Joey, aw Joey I just wanted to hug him. Domestic violence has such a long reach in the impact it has, far beyond the physical side of it. There is just so much to process, I loved the development in Shannon and Johnny's relationship, Gibsie and Claire get a bit more glimpses in this one. I haven't read the blurbs for the upcoming books but I am hoping Gibsie gets one.

With a lot of the main character(s) being teens there is a lot of sex type talk, banter, words/phrases that some may find offensive but it lends authenticity to the group/age of the characters. I don't have the next in the series, I do have two of the books in the series but I think one is that last and the other may be the fourth so I need to buy them. They are thick chunky books and I have been having readers block but I sank this, 900 odd pages in 3 days. They absolutely grab you, pull you in and I think if you come from that type of background you get emotionally wrought, ooft, 4.5/5.

My Review

This is book two but you can absolutely read it as a standalone! Predators and humans, marines and a synthetic are joining forces to face the ultimate threat. Aliens have always been sought after by the company because of their value as a weapon, well someone has beat them to it. Not only have they honed it to weaponize them, control them and added some even more deadly features *gasp* I know right!

It took me a wee bit to settle into this one as it jumps about a fair bit, the marines, the synthetics, the predator(s), there are so many characters/scenes. Once I did get into it and settle to what was going on I did enjoy it. The aliens, your chances have always been low with them but once weaponised and controlled, especially in the numbers these guys are, ooft.

I am hoping we see more of the queen in book three and things come to a head, that karma finds those that need it AND get to see more of the predators. There really has only been one main featured with little mention of the others even though we know they are there and teaming up with us, at a distance.

The people behind the alien weaponization are not just sickos but absolutely mad, like genuine madness. Even the whole plan I am like what the actual so it will be interesting to see what book three holds and where it is going to take the story. I do quite like the synthetic, ours not the other side, 3/5 for this one.

My Review

Jim Heron is still coming to grips with his new found status, learning his "powers" and trying to do his best in the fight for souls to save humanity. With his helpers (Adrian & Eddie) they have their new target to save, Isaac Rothe, prev black ops and now fighting for money he finds himself jailed, a beautiful/powerful attorney assigned to him and being hunted by an assassin with heavy duty power behind them. Torn between his feelings and keeping her safe, Isaac tries to flee but his defender won't walk away, she is like a dog with a bone.

The book has so much going on, good vs evil, humanity, human weakness, evil, angels, she devil demon, Isaac being targeted by some serious professional bad guys but so much is connected. I think that is the thing with Ward, the writing is carved and designed to pull you in and even, dare I say, feel a bit of sadness for the baddy?

As with Ward's books there are adult spicy scenes so if you are new to the books fyi. We follow Jim and co trying to save the world with very little guidance and also get to hear from the evil one alongside Isaac as he tries to get through one day at a time. He has done and seen some badness in his time but Isaac isn't a bad guy.

I liked this one I didn't love it, I felt like I was missing a huge part, like are we going to see any of these souls/characters being fought for again? If not we are abruptly cut from their story, like stuff i really just getting going and then the book ends. There are a fair few of the books in this series but is it just each book is their story then done? If so I do feel a wee bit lacking. The tension between Isaac and Grier (his lawyer) is good, spicy if a bit I will, I won't I will I won't ish but still, I thought Isaac deserved a break. Matthias and Devina, hearing from them was good/riveting and would have liked more. Jim I hope we get more time spent on him because for being the chosen one he is still a bit in the dark about what he is able to do and not although his pals are a bit more versed in what they do. Defo still got questions but I did like it, just not love, 3.5/5.

My Review

Firstly let me say this is the second book in a series, I absolutely advise reading the first, Sweetpea, available to buy now. This book picks up where Sweetpea leaves off, Rhiannon is pregnant, her boyfriend is in jail awaiting trial for several gruesome murders, murders Rhiannon committed herself. Trying to come to terms with pending motherhood, the changes in her body, her bossy fetus and of course her constant need to kill,Rhiannon has her hands full.

If you haven't read Skuse, and I am not sure of her other works but these books are absolutely not for the easily offended. Rhiannon is a brutal killer wih no morals, she has a gob on her that could make a sailor blush, she is self absorbed, horny, crude, sarcastic, hilarious (in a very non pc way), dangerous and one of the most psychotic female serial killers created!

Each chapter (well almost every chapter), like the previous book opens with a list of people she would like to kill that day, if circumstances permitted. She is trying to deal with her changing body, roller coaster emotions, blood thirsty ways oh and the police who are investigating her partner which means questions questions questions.

The book started off a bit of a different pace for me and I wasn't sure if I was going to like this as much as the first, sequels often have the hard job of keeping up with the previous offering. Needless worry, in fact this is one of the very few times I rated the sequel higher than the original which is no mean feat and hats off to the author. Once the book gets going it ensnares you and I found it hard to put the book down, some of it like a car crash you just can't look away. She is a terrible person, a brutal murderer but you find yourself rooting for her, a vigilante who doesn't like animals being hurt so she will always get points off me for that!

Her relationship with a specific character I really liked but it also had me a bit beside myself, by exposing herself to friendships she increases the risk of exposure. At one point it reminded me of, or rather, it echoed Hannibal Lecter and Clarice Starling's weird relationship but in a good way, absolutely not a criticism. This book is an absolute mind trip, Rhiannon is a unique killer I think and I have read hundred of books with murderers but this is my first pregnant killer who goes on a bit of a journey herself to "mend" her ways but will she be successful? How easy is it to quit your murderous ways, how do you change your future when your past just won't go away and most importantly can she keep it together when all eyes are on her? Packed with bad language, murderous behaviour, sex, lies, kill lists, an outrageous book with a main character holy water and a priest would struggle to bring from the dark side, I loved it! 5/5 for me this time, I will be checking out the rest of Skuse's work and wait impatiently for the next book! Review Beyong Exile (day by day Armageddon) by J L Bourne

This is the second book in the journey of a mans survival in a world over run by the dead. Again as with the first book we are reading his journal entries day by day and sometimes more than one entry per day.

It picks up where the first book has left off (with a small recap of the previous incase you hadn't read it). When you think most of the fast pace and excitement was covered in the first book you would be wrong, my heart has been thumping reading this one.

More nerve wracking situations as the survivors try to keep ahead of the dead, get supplies and maintain some(any) kind of normal existance. We are introduced to more characters and more depth of those we know and knew, and heart stopping action all in the name of survival.

I love this book and was not disappointed, sometimes with sequels it can drag or you are let down but this is definately not the case this time. I was hooked from book one and continue to be so, great paced and well written.

5/5 for me.
