It started off almost absurdly quaint, talking about the council seat (or "casual vacancy" I guess) and I was expecting it to be funny, but in a subtle way. Like some of those British books or movies that take place in small villages where everyone takes little things VERY seriously. But then when it got more into the younger characters, it got pretty dark and sad, and quite gritty. I did care about some of the characters, but I was surprised by what I thought was a change of tone. In the end I felt undecided about whether or not I even liked the book.

Thanks for stopping by my blog too! I notice you read a lot of thrillers. Have you read Paul Cleave? He's my go-to thriller writer of the moment.Beatnik Maryhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10452820877029354490noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7302205253318488863.post-52412464636796946252012-12-18T01:12:13.397+00:002012-12-18T01:12:13.397+00:00I've heard a lot of good and bad about this bo...I've heard a lot of good and bad about this book. But I haven't yet read a review that made me say "I should read that!" Your review confirms my opinion yet again. :) Maybe someday I'll try it out, but it looks like there are so many better books to read first!Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01974988315420539840noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7302205253318488863.post-35057207635858634112012-12-10T18:30:59.237+00:002012-12-10T18:30:59.237+00:00I've seen such mixed reviews of this book but ...I've seen such mixed reviews of this book but to be honest I do still really want to read it at some point. Don't think I'll be picking it up very soon though. It sounds like it's very cumbersome though and it's a shame that it wasn't condensed to be a better read.
I doubt if I will struggle through so many pages.
AnnAnn Summervillehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13300190648788509096noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7302205253318488863.post-80661714794673303962012-12-08T18:48:22.083+00:002012-12-08T18:48:22.083+00:00I am a fan of JK Rowling as well and was excited t...I am a fan of JK Rowling as well and was excited to read The Casual Vacancy. I didn't go into it expecting it to be like HP at all, but I did expect a story that held my attention, which, unfortunately, it didn't. I tried several times to read it but struggled with it so it went unfinished. The story was far too grim for my liking and all the language and situations pushed me even further away. I rarely don't finish a book but The Casual Vacancy was one I couldn't.

I'll gladly read another J.K. Rowling book, though. She is a gifted writer. It's the story itself that I didn't like.
Shirleyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06065113724187544247noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7302205253318488863.post-70289832683287073572012-12-08T14:58:00.675+00:002012-12-08T14:58:00.675+00:00This sounds totally different from her usual work....This sounds totally different from her usual work.
