Review - Love you more by Jennifer Grant

Love You More: The Divine Surprise of Adopting My DaughterLove You More: The Divine Surprise of Adopting My Daughter by Jennifer Grant

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

What a wonderful and uplifting story of Jennifer Grants journey through life and the process of adoption.

The story goes through many stages. We are introduced to Jennifer's life, how she spent her early years with her husband. Their first home, her faith, their children and the things that happened to decide they wanted to adopt.

We are introduced not only to her children but close friends and some of the people involved in the actual adoption. The journey of what they endured with the process of the adoption, peoples attitudes and comments both during their deciding to adopt and once they got their little girl. Why they chose a child from Guatemala and a child of that age and sex.

The story is so easy to read, infact it is so well written it is like meeting a person and listening to their story of their life, which in effect it is but it doesn't just read like words off a page. The style is so comfortable and easy going that it is like talking to a friend or a friend of a friend.

This is the first time I have read a book on adoption and I worried that maybe it would drone on with procedures and such but it was a beautiful read and I would certainly read another by this author, 5/5 for me.

I received this book free from the publisher through the BookSneeze®.com book review bloggers program. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own. Review - Colorado Abduction by Cassie Miles

Colorado Abduction (Christmas at the Carlisles #1) (Harlequin Intrigue #1165)Colorado Abduction (Christmas at the Carlisles #1) by Cassie Miles

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Blurb from Goodreads

A CITY SLICKER LIKE BURKE HAD NO BUSINESS BEING ON HER COLORADO RANCH

But Carolyn Carlisle knew she needed him. Not only was the Carlisle Ranch a target for sabotage just weeks before Christmas, but also her family had been threatened and danger lurked around every corner. Carolyn was used to being in charge, but incredibly sexy FBI agent J. D. Burke had other ideas. He was domineering, stubborn and vowed never to let an assignment turn personal. Still, with the enemy just as elusive as the agent's penetrating gaze, Carolyn secretly hoped Burke would let down his guard and act on their intense chemistry. Even if one amazing night ended up breaking her usually hardened heart.

My Review

Well Mills and Boons has changed since I last read them. Carolyns sister in law is kidnapped after an arguement with her brother and the actions starts from there. Before this the range had a deliberate fire and some other property damage, was someone warning them and now took it to another level?

Carolyn is a business woman who is as stubborn as she is head strong but finds herself attracted to the agent in charge.

To be honest the thriller part of the story is really good and I kept reading as I was intrigued to find out what happened. However the old mills and boon attraction crept in and whilst fine in the old books - during a high profile kidnapping would you really be thinking about how the agent would be in bed or him her? That did annoy and put me off a bit but the action of the murders and attacks definately made up for it.

My biggest complaint has to be the unanswered questions. Why the sudden change in the wife, what was said and discussed and more importantly why wasn't the reader kept in the loop? After doing a bit of searching there are another two books to the series so who knows maybe they revisit it in them and give us the answers. Maybe it is a selling point? As this book is free for download from Amazon maybe this is the authors ploy. I don't think I will be buying them though just yet however if they became free or very discount price I would certainly get the next two. 3/5 for me

Review - The colour Of Death by Michael Cordy

The Colour of DeathThe Colour of Death by Michael Cordy

'I’m part of the Transworld Book Group!’

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

From the back cover

In a residential neighbourhood of Portland, Oregon, an unknown young woman uncovers a shocking crime by inexplicably sensing the evil within its walls. To the police, she is a mystery. She can't even tell them her own name. They christen her Jane Doe.

Suffering terrifying hallucinations, Jane is assigned to Nathan Fox, a forensic psychiatrist struggling with his own demons. Together they must piece together the jigsaw that is Janes identity.

Then a sequence of brutal killings terrorizes the city and Fox learns that Jane is the only cryptic link bewteen the unrelated victims. To solve the murders, Fox must discard his black and white preconceptions, look beyond the spectrum of normal human experience and confront the dark truth of her past...and his own.

My review

This is my second read from the Transworld book group and what a brilliant choice. The action starts right away in the prologue and by the first chapter I was hooked. Nathan Fox(Dr) and Jane Doe are our main characters and we are introduced to them straight away. For Nathan a doctor who is committed to his patients but wont let anyone get close to him after the horror he experienced as a child and losing his family.

Jane Doe we have to find out about her as she does herself, having no memory of why she saved the girls or even who she is or anything about herself except for a special genetic condition she has that scares her and shows her so much horror.

Between the two of them they work together to discover what is going on with Jane and her extraordinary "hallucinations" and before long they are tangled up in a web of murder and horror. Can Dr Nathan Fox find the key to helping Jane Doe remember who she is and what is has to do with these killings.

I loved this story, for a short while I thought I was going to not understand the condition Jane has as it is a bit complex but Michael Cordy explained it so easily in the book I got to learn about a new condition and understand it with ease. The book goes at a great pace and there is plenty of questions raised throughout the book. I love this with novels however hate that not every question gets answered, not in this case, Right up to the end your kept in suspense and then everything is explained, with an opening for a follow up maybe. Some of the scenes (especially near the end) are quite horrifying and uncomfortable to read (Delaney and Jane Doe scene) but it does not take anything away from the story.

This was my first Michael Cordy book and it won't be my last, I hope they make this into a series! 5/5 for me, a fantastic read, fresh and different and I stayed up all night to get it finished as I couldn't put it down.

Review - Zombie Nights by Tom Lichtenberg

Zombie NightsZombie Nights by Tom Lichtenberg

My rating: 2 of 5 stars

This book is free at http://www.smashwords.com/books/view/10913

Dave Connor awakes to find himself buried, as he fights to claw himself out he discovers a wound that undoubtidly put him in there (along with the person who inflicted said wound). Puzzled as to who he is, what happened to him and where he is Dave stumbles around in the dark until he finds something he feels familiar with.

The story progresses with Dave discovering his previous life, how to communicate and fit in with life as he is now. Although he is a "zombie" I wouldn't have put this in with zombie stories as it is so very different from every other one I have read. I thought it was going to have a big confrontation and retribution but the story took a different turn and I was quite disappointed. After a bit it just fell flat for me and I think it had so much potential. It could be listed more as a gangster type story than a zombie, so for me 2/5.

Review - Half-Inch by McCarty Griffin

Half-InchHalf-Inch by McCarty Griffin

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Blurb from Goodreads

Pammy has had enough of Bobby, her abusive drunk of a husband. One lovely spring day, she decides to kill him, despite the fact that they will soon be divorced and he will, at least in the eyes of the law, be out of her life for good. Indulging in homicidal daydreams for years has led her to devise her own perfect and completely bizarre plan.

My review

For over a decade(and then some) Pammy has been married to Bobby, a violent nasty little thug who has done nothing but use and abuse her practically since they dated. Bobby has decided he is going to divorce Pammy and take everything he can get, she hasn't stood up to him before and he knows "Pammy Whammy" wont stand up to him now. But he is wrong! Bobby unwittingly goes too far and awakens in his wife a side neither of them knew existed and this side has had enough. Divorce won't cut it, she wants him dead and after years of Pammy fantasizing about it it is about to come true.

With her sassy confident lawyer Pammy takes up her part in the divorce and starts enjoying life as she has never known it before. Able to watch tv and drink as much soda as she wants without any repercussions from her husband.

Really easy to read and I think anyone who has been touched by domestic violence will be able to relate to Pammy. I quite enjoyed it and wish it had been a bit longer 3/5

Review - The Intruders by Michael Marshall

Blurb from Goodreads

For ex-cop Jack Whalen, it all begins with a visit from a childhood friend, a lawyer who needs Jack's help. The family of a noted scientist has been senselessly, brutally murdered, and the scientist is nowhere to be found.

But Jack has more pressing concerns. The past that drove him from the L.A.P.D. continues to haunt him. And his wife has disappeared during a routine business trip to Seattle. She never checked into her hotel, she isn't answering her cell phone. She is gone.

A third missing person, a little girl in Oregon, is found miles away. But it soon becomes obvious that she is not an innocent victim . . . and far from defenseless.

Something very strange is happening—a perplexing series of troubling events that's leading Jack Whalen into the shadows. And the secrets buried there are unlike anything he, or anyone, could possibly have imagined.

The IntrudersThe Intruders by Michael Marshall Smith

My rating: 2 of 5 stars

Jack Whalen is an ex LAPD cop, getting on with life in his own way, until his wife goes missing and everything turns upside down.

A ten year old goes missing although she is more than what she seems and can take care of herself and anything that gets in her way.

The two become tangled with many more people and the story unravels as it progresses.

This book is a mind boggle, it starts really well, a family is brutally murdered with the father being the main suspect but from there it just goes weird. Jack is contacted by an old school friend and it jumps back and forth between Jacks past and present and the other characters place in the here and now. It hints at what was the cause for the family being killed and why Jacks wife went missing and is behaving strangly.

Even after finishing the book there are so many questions and even if I got all the answers I still don't think I would be happy. It was too weird and long drawn out for me so a 2/5 for me.

Review - Married Lovers by Jackie Collins

Married LoversMarried Lovers by Jackie Collins

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

The joy of getting over 100 pages in to realise this is another book I have read, the 3rd this week. I couldn't remember the end though so stuck with it.

Jackie Collins doing what she does best, junk food for the brain. Petty spoilt rich bitches, sex, drugs and skulduggery.

Cameron Paradise, Paradise the chosen name after running away from her abusive husband has fled to L.A to make a new life for herself as a fitness trainer with big plans on the horizon.

Ryan Richards indepndant movie maker, married to Mandy Richards daughter of a multi millionaire and the spoilt attitude to go with it is reasessing his life and love for his wife, does he want to pursue it try counselling or jsut go for a divorce.

Cameron and Ryans paths soon cross and there starts an attraction that neither of them want to admit. Cameron has a boyfriend on the quiet, a client who wants nothing more than to make her his and it is Ryans best friend.

It is the usual Collins classic, lives all tangled and linked and plenty of scandal and secrets to be reveiled. 4/5 for me. Decent paced and easy to read (I should think so I have read it twice).

review - Death Row by Mark Pearson

Death RowDeath Row by Mark Pearson

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Blurb from the back cover

Fifteen years ago, when Jack Delaney was a beat cop not long out of Hendon, two children went missing from Carlton Row, a small residential street in Harrow. They were never seen alive again.

Two years later, Delaney rescued a young girl from the boot of an abandoned car, leading to the capture of Peter Garnier, one of the most horrific child rapists and murders in recent history. Although the bodies from Carlton Row were never found, Garnier admitted to murdering the two children and many, many more. He was sent to prison for the rest of his natural life.

Jack had thought the case was closed. But he couldn't have been more wrong.

This morning another young boy was taken from Carlton Row. Peter Garnier sends Jack the chiling message that they are both at the heart of the mystery, but Delaney has no time to figure out why, or how. Because tonight, the killings begin again...

My review

Well written, easy to follow and the story captures you pretty much from the first chapter (actually from the blurb on the back!)I haven't read any of his other books and think if I had read the one before this one (I would think there is one due to some things said in this book) I would have enjoyed it just that bit more and had a better feel for the characters.

That said I don't think you particularly have to have read it it just would have been my preference but as I was given this book I hadn't realised it was a series or part of one.

The characters are pretty strong and wether you like or hate them you get a strong feel for them. I quite liked Jack as a character and a cop. The story is a page turner and pretty good paced, before long bodies are piling up and the chase is on as to who the actual killer is and a few twists and suprises along the way. It took me the best part of a day to read and I couldn't put it down as I wanted to find out who done it and what was going on with the other characters. 4/5 for me.

Blurb from the Website

With a dark twist on the classic thriller novel, Jon KuCala reveals that evil wears many faces in this unforgettable experience of psychological terror.

During the uncertain, dwindling days of the late 1980s, the small community of Riverbank, Pennsylvania has fallen prey to a sadistic killer known only as “Jack-Man,” who is robbing the town of its solace and peace of mind, piece by gruesome piece. For a group of misbegotten friends, as well as the flawed detective who is obsessed with the one case he is unable to solve, the horror of Jack-Man is about to hit shockingly close to home.

Elsewhere in the Midwest, two equally brutal serial murderers, who share a terrifying link with Jack-Man and his Riverbank crimes, are on the loose. But what could that link be? And how can it ever be broken?

As the 1980s give way to the turbulent nineties, the surviving victims of Jack-Man’s bloody rampage try to put the past behind them and move on with their lives. But they are about to cross paths with the elusive maniac one last time, thrusting them into a harrowing battle of wills fought on Jack-Man’s own hellish turf that threatens to not only destroy their own lives, but the lives of those they love as well.

You can buy this book by using the direct link at the top of the page (next to the blurb) or go directly to the site http://store.yahoo.com/cgi-bin/clink?dorrance+7XZRvv+index.html

Donna is obsessed with her father, believing him to be a monster and not human. He had to be after what he did to her, surely? On the 5th anniversary of his death she goes to the cemetary with her friend and boyfriend to prove this. If he was human then she will be able to pick up his vibes and if she can do that he was human and in turn so is she. Unfortunately the night doesn't work out like that and Donna falls victim to the serial killer Jack-man. So starts the hunt for the killer the town thought has disappeared two years ago.

For the first quarter of this story I didn't think I was going to like it. It jumped about a fair bit, present to past depending on which character the chapter was concentrating on but easy to follow whereas this method of writing can so easily confuse and put you off, not really the case for this story. There also was a bit of random swearing that at points didn't really seem necessary but as the characters develop and the story unfolds you get past this and tune into what is actually going on.

The murders are brutal and we get glimpses of the killer when the author concentrates on him through snippets in chapters throughout the story.

The books follows the survivors through their lives and how they cope and pull through the tragedy and when fate pulls them together again it looks like the whole lazy crew will be joining Donna or will they?

As I said the first quarter was a bit touch and go but once the storyline background was established I was hooked, couldn't put it down and read it in one day. 4 out of 5 for me

Horrified - diet book aimed at 6 year olds

The cover of the forthcoming Maggie Goes on a Diet

Fancy putting your daughter off her food? Then buy her Maggie Goes on a Diet, a children's book aimed – according to Barnes & Noble, one of the many booksellers on whose website it is currently listed – at six- to 12-year-olds. It has been written and self-published by Hawaii-based author Paul Kramer, whose previous titles include Do Not Dread Wetting the Bed, in which little Cynthia "chases away the pee-pee monster"; and Louie the Lobster Mobster, in which a criminal crustacean gets his comeuppance.

The book tells the story of 14-year-old Maggie, who according to its blurb "is transformed from being overweight and insecure to a normal-sized teen who becomes the school soccer star". It's not out until October, but so disquieting is the cover image that perhaps we may, in this case, allow ourselves to judge the book by it. Maggie is depicted as dumpy, pigtailed, wearing an unflattering jumper (has nobody told her that wide lateral stripes aren't a good look when you're carrying a few extra pounds?), staring into the mirror, presumably dreaming of a thinner self who will one day wear the tiny pink prom dress she's holding wistfully to her chest.

We tried contacting Kramer but he was not available to comment. On children's book blog TreasuryIslands one commenter said: "It's not even slightly appropriate for the age group they're aiming it at," and tags such as "body fascism" and "give your children neuroses" have been added to the book's Amazon listing.

Perhaps in Hawaii it's perfectly OK to read a book to your highly impressionable six-year-old daughter about a teenage girl, at the prime age for developing anorexia. Presumably Kramer has written the book with the best of intentions – as a means of addressing America's childhood obesity crisis. But a week after the Advertising Standards Authority banned the children's clothing website Zazzle.co.uk from stocking girls' T-shirts carrying the slogan, "Nothing tastes as good as skinny feels," to hear that this book will be hitting the shelves seems bizarre.

I saw this on the bbc news website at work yesterday, I cannot even begin to say how horrified I am at this. Children are battling eating disorders and the public image of what the perfect body is already without a book reinforcing this and aiming it at 6-12 year olds?!?!?!?!? what was he thinking, no wonder he is unavailable for comment.

Review - Twelve by Jasper Kent (Transworld Book Group review)

Twelve (The Danilov Quintet, #1)Twelve by Jasper Kent

My rating: 2 of 5 stars

I don't normally like war books but as this is part of the Transworld review books I thought I would choose something I wouldn't normally pick for myself.

A group of Russian officers ask for help from twelve mercenaries who say they change help win the war against France. It seems unlikely however before long they have proved themselves and then some. The way they take down the French is unknown although it is in such marked numbers people fear it is some plague that is effecting only the french. Eventually out group of officers find out why and begin to seek out the why and hows putting themselves in mortal danger.

The war side of it I actually enjoyed for a while which is suprising however the nature of mercenaries, not so much which is a first for me as I have loved every book dealing with those beings I have read. I felt the two didn't go well together this time, it seemed like too much was going on, two many hard names to remember and I often got confused as to who was who again. It took over 200 pages before we find out why the mercenaries are so good and by that point I was so sick of the hinting and waiting for somethig big to actually happen.

The other thing that really annoyed me was the main character Captain Aleksei Ivanovich Danilov (quite a mouthful isn't it!). He was just a soldier who at one point is almost super hero as he manages to take on and defeat an unseemingly beatable enemy when so many others perish so easily.

I think if the story had concentrated a bit more on one theme or the other it could have been really good but instead I felt it was thinly spread and didn't do either side justice and it seemed just too easy for the Captain by the end. 2/5 for me.

Review - Before I Go To Sleep by S J Watson

Before I Go to SleepBefore I Go to Sleep by S.J. Watson

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Blurb from the back

Memories define us.

So what is you lost yours every time you went to sleep?

Your name, your identity, your past, even the people you love - all forgotten overnight.

And the only person you trust may only be telling you half the story.

Welcome to Christine's life.

My review

If the blurb isn't enough to entice you the first few pages certainly are. You are drawn into Christine's world and seeing it through her eyes, experiencing her day to day battles with something we take for granted everyday.

Imagine waking up and not knowing your husband, your house, your own body or face. This is how it is for Christine everyday until she secretly gets help from a doctor and learns how to start finding herself a little everyday only for it to be wiped out when she goes to sleep.

Christine goes through some tests and ideas with the doctor and starts using a diary to try and keep track of her days and her life everyday as she doesn't remember it.

It is a powerful, moving and great paced story. I literally did not want to put it down to find out what happened. How can it go anywhere as she never remembers anything? Doubting characters as she does one day and then loving them the next. It is a rollercoaster ride of emotions and a fabulously written novel. I am so surprised that this is a debut, I loved so much about it and can't give my fav bits away as it would turn this into a spoiler review which I don't want. Suffice to say it is an amazing read, I loved it. Witty, emotional, brave and so easy to read and fall into. 5/5 for me

Review 0 Mississippi Trial, 1995 by Chris Crowe

Mississippi Trial, 1955Mississippi Trial, 1955 by Chris Crowe

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

What a great piece of historical fiction. When I read the review for this I knew I would like it, I love a time to kill and it reminded me of that. A great story that you can learn a bit of history from is a great way for people to learn who don't always hold info reading historical texts.

The story is based mainly on Hiram visiting his grandfather in a small town in Mississippi, a town he loves and remembers fondly. But going back as a teenager shows the town in a very different light from when he was a child. Racism and segregation are in every corner and when a young black boy is murdered Hiram finds himself in the middle of the court case and finding out truths that change his whole outlook in life and his relationships.

The beginning is slow going as it builds up the picture of Hirams family unit but this is important as it reflects hugely on the book and his character when he goes back to visit as a teenager and shows the contrast in how the town is to him now.

It doesn't go into too many nasty details but paints a very vivid and haunting picture that kept me hooked until the last page, 4out of 5 for me.

Review - Forbidden by Tabitha Suzuma

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

What a powerful and moving subject on one of the biggest relationship taboos and nonos there is.

Growing up in a disfunctional family, raising your brothers and sisters, trying keep a house going, social services away and keep going at school. A mother who is constantly missing and better off so when she finally does appear with inappropriate behaviour, stories and alcohol dependancy. This is how it is for Maya and Lochan who have always seen each other as best friends, companions and never as brother and sister.

I thought it took a wee while to get started but as I got through it I realised this was needed to get to know the characters properly and understand and get a feel for the situation and family life. A love story that at first glance you think this is going to be wrong, disgusting and against nature but as you read the book it opens your eyes and shows you a whole different side that you wouldn't think able to comprehend or understand.

The chapters are told one through Maya, one through Lochan continuously about how they are seeing and feeling things as they experience it. I can't write too much about it without giving the story away but it is a page turner and very well written.

It is a horrible situation for them and heartbreaking to read however I couldn't put it down and read it in just over a day. 4/5 for me, hard to read at a few points, brave and challenging but worth sticking with.

Review - The Living Dead by various authors

Well you imagine a book with a collection of short stories about zombies, how could you go wrong? Well you can, the second story (I believe it was or maybe the third) didn't even have zombies in it. It was people reunited through playing zombies in a zombie movie *sigh*. It would probably have been quite enjoyable in any other setting but the fact you pick up a book expecting it to be all zombie stories and its not does lead to dissapoitment.

On a positive note there was some great new zombie ideas in there and I mostly enjoyed the stories just a select few annoyed me and that is always enough to pull a scoring down on the book.

I was delighted to find a Stephen King addition in there (one of my fav horror authors as a child and still enjoy as an adult).

The start or each story gives you a little about the author (and some books they have written, briefly) and a small bit of info about the story that follows.

Had the stories all been 100% zombies I would have probably given it a 5 but the few sneaky not proper flesh tearing ones dragged it down a little for me. Overall though any zombies fans should give it a go and you will pick up a few new authors and zombie titles in there. 3 of 5 for me.

THE BODY
A decade ago, Alan Langford's charred ramins were discovered in his burt-out car. His wife Donna was found guilty of conspiracy to murder her husband and sentenced to ten years in prison.

THE LETTER
But just before she is released, Donna receives a nasty shock: an anonymous letter containing a photo of her husband. The man she hates with every fibre of her being - the man she paid to have murdered - seems very much alive and well.

THE RACE AGAINST TIME
How is it possible that her husband is still alive? Where is he? Who sent the photo, and why?

My Review

Imagine going to jail for the murder of your husband, losing your little girl and spending a decade behind bars for your crime. Imagine getting photographic proof your husband is still alive and well, what would you do?

This is what happens to Donna Langford who hires a private detective to find out the truth behind the photo(s) and letter. We follow her journey as the investigation reveals all the answers and flings up a few suprises, twists and unexpected turns.

Before long detective Thorne gets involved and the findings open up cases past and lead them to some shocking revelations.

Great paced, Thorne is his usual thrilling self but I felt the ending was very rushed and over too quickly (which isn't always a bad thing but just a tad too quick for me). 3/5 this time round.
